How I Went from Hating Trail Mix to Creating the Trail Mix Method™

Growing up I didn't really like trail mix. I’d eat the pretzels and M&M’s, then leave the “healthier” stuff behind. I thought it was a waste and could never understand who in the world would eat nuts and dried fruit. Like, ew.
But as I got older, especially after I went to school to be a personal chef, my palate changed. I've always been more of a salty‑over‑sweet girl, so much so I used to eat salt by the handfuls. How do I not have high blood pressure?? I have no idea. My cholesterol, on the other hand…that's a different story for a different day.
I've never been much of a snack girlie, preferring a fresh home‑cooked meal over anything, but when I did indulge, I didn't hold back. I'm obsessed with pastries and all things with a sweet‑and‑salty flavor profile, especially anything with salted caramel or hot honey.
Then one day, while eating salted caramel trail mix, I realized something. This snack had all the flavors I crave in one. And it wasn't just because it was salted caramel flavored. I experimented with different brands and flavors after that, and I noticed a pattern.
Which led to me thinking, maybe I could try this with meal prep. Swap fattier meats for leaner versions, salt for herbs and spices, butter for avocado oil, refined sugars and carbs for whole grains and fiber. And thus the Trail Mix Method ™ was born.

I now hardly ever use seasoned salts in meals, and when I do use salt it's either pink Himalayan or sea salt. The biggest win for me is not having to use a sauce on everything anymore. No hot sauce, no barbecue sauce, no yum yum sauce, no ranch, nothing. I've completely adjusted my taste buds to enjoy meals the way they are prepared, especially when healthier options are available.
This isn't a diet; it's a shift. No deprivation of the flavors we love, while continuing to indulge in the snacks we like in moderation, until we no longer crave them in the same way. When your palate changes, so do your snack choices.
And that’s really what the Trail Mix Method ™ is, it’s taste‑bud training, not self‑punishment. Instead of ripping your favorite foods away overnight, you start changing the mix of what’s on your plate and in your snack bowl. You keep the ritual; the movie night, the “I need something” moment, the afternoon pick‑me‑up; but you slowly swap what’s actually in your hand.
The Trail Mix Method ™ is my way of saying, you don’t have to choose between pleasure and nourishment. You can keep the flavors you love, slowly shift how they show up, and let your taste buds catch up to the version of you who actually feels good in their body.
And if you’re reading this thinking, “Okay, I love this in theory, but I have no idea where to start,” that’s exactly what my free Trail Mix Method ™ interest call is for. It’s a low‑pressure space where we look at your real‑life snacks and meals, map out which phase you’re in, and sketch one or two gentle swaps you can start this week. If you want support turning this from a good idea into an actual rhythm in your kitchen, you’re invited to book a call and we’ll explore what that could look like together.
